Limited Capacity filling up

Many of the learners we work with struggle with fear as a result of trauma or Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) manifesting into struggles in academics, absenteeism, social challenges, and anxiety. Learners are resilient and given the right environmental conditions and interventions, the symptoms associated with trauma may be reduced.School libraries are in a unique position in the school setting to provide this sort of environment for students. Because the school library serves all students in the school, it is likely that a proportion of our students have experienced trauma. We can develop long-term, supportive relationships with students and create spaces in which they might find support, understanding, and healing. This session will examine what to look for in identifying learners who have experienced trauma in their lives and ways we can support them in becoming more resilient.
